Action Alert: Dwayne Lane’s Special Use Permit

July 10, 2013

This is of utmost importance, especially for those living in Arlington City Limits or surrounding areas that will be impacted.

For over 15 years, Pilchuck Audubon Society, Futurewise, the Stillaguamish Flood Control District and others tried to prevent the urban growth area expansion and annexation of the Island Crossing farmland/floodplain into the City of Arlington for the main purpose of allowing Dwayne Lane to build a car lot at I-5 and SR 530.  While we were successful the first time around through the series of appeals through the Court of Appeals, during the time when the County Council consisted of a pro-development majority, Dwayne Lane tried again for the UGA expansion and rezone and was successful through the series of appeals. The City of Arlington annexed this property and now Dwayne Lane is working its way through the process for its car lot.

The Stillaguamish Flood Control District with support from Futurewise and Pilchuck Audubon Society have commented on the SEPA Mitigated Determination of Non-Significance (MDNS) and on the application. We continue to be opposed to the development of Island Crossing because of its impacts on flooding in the area and the cost to taxpayers! This development can create the same flooding impacts across I-5 as what happened several years ago in Chehalis that blocked use of I-5 in both directions for over a week because of flooding.

On Thursday, July 18th at 7 p.m., there will be Hearing Examiner Public Hearing for Dwayne Lane’s Special Use Permit. The hearing will be located in the City Council Chambers, 110 East 3rd Street in Arlington. The special use permit is for the construction of a new auto-dealership oriented toward, and adjacent to, Interstate 5. The dealership will include a new, two-story, 34,639 square foot building and associated outdoor display area for the sale of automobiles. This project will fully utilize approximately 4.5 acres of the 14.34 acre site.

WE ( Pilchuck Audubon Society, Futurewise) CONTINUE TO OPPOSE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAND CROSSING BECAUSE OF THE IMPACTS IF WILL HAVE ON FLOODING. PLEASE COME TO THE HEARING AND TESTIFY AGAINST THIS DEVELOPMENT AND AT THE MINIMUM FOR A NEW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT BECAUSE THE FLOODING REPORT THE CITY IS RELYING ON IS FLAWED.

IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND THE HEARING, PLEASE SUBMIT WRITTEN COMMENTS by July 18th TO:
